I estimate that her potential, her college honors and her successful internship would put her in the pay range of 45k-50k. Though I don’t mind if it’s even half of that and I have to compensate her more so she can have a work schedule arranged arround my sons schooling. I’m just hoping that the law provides for it to be reasonable for my survival as well.

Dear lostidentify:

Greetings. You sound like you have a talented wife who could earn a significant salary and support herself, if necessary. Nevertheless, the degree and ability to earn an income are just parts of the overall alimony calculations and analysis. Thank you.

I’ve been married for ten years and am about to seperate. I’ve supported my wife while she finished her degree (which I’ve yet to do) and while she raised our five year old son. The verbal agreement was for her to start working once our son started school. Now that he is in kindergarten and she is very capable of working will I be required to pay alimony? If so, roughly how much should I expect to pay? Also, she expects to keep the house and car which I deem unrealistic, how does the law look at this? I currently make ~$5500/mo, we have ~20k of credit card debt, ~17k due on a vehicle and ~ 20k of equity in our home. I take home ~3300/mo and she is asking for 60% or $1980. Is this a high figure?
Thank you in advance
