Dear nomorebs:

Greetings. Let’s see what I can and cannot answer:

1. The statute does not state a minimum period of time for alimony.

2. There is no such thing as a typical alimony award and the income of the parties is only one factor. I cannot give a number on this website - as it would be more reasonable to sit down with an attorney in person or on the phone and have them examine the entire situation.

3. Real estate in another state is divided the same way the real estate in NC is divided if it is marital.

4. Marital misconduct is behavior that usually harms the other spouse.

Thank you.

I have read that alimony depends on how long the marriage lasted in North Carolina. I would like to know just how long the marriage must last to be considered for alimony? and what is typically awarded to the dependant spouse if the supporting spouse makes about $500,000.00 a year? Also, how is real estate in another state divided? Is it still equitable if it is in another state? What does “Marital misconduct of a spouse” mean? Thank You.
