Common Law Marriage

Rosen Law Firm was quoted recently in this WRAL interview: Court decision could expand scope of marriage in NC :: WRAL.com

My question is since NC is not a common-law marriage state, could this ruling overall now put NC as a common law marriage state or is just simply going to affect the law in terms of divorce ruling and bigamy? I am asking for the reason of benefits and receiving benefits from Social Security… it would utlimately affect my benefits if NC became a state where you could legally enter into a common law marriage. Any information is appreciated.

NC does not currently recognize common law marriage. It is impossible to guess what the long-term impact of this ruling will be upon that, or any other, area. I cannot give you a more definite answer, as it would just be speculation at this time.
