hello my name is Clint and was married 2 yrs ago in Jamaica but didn’t have a state of North Carolina marriage license w me and we did receive a Jamaica marriage license. so technically im not married in the state of North Carolina. My ex wife thinks there is some paperwork that we still need to take care of seeing that ill b moving to California in about a month. could u please point me In the right direction. I need to put this all behind me. thanks guys
Just because you did not obtain a North Carolina marriage license, that does not mean your marriage isn’t recognized here in North Carolina. If you have a valid marriage in a foreign country, then North Carolina will look to see if the marriage was valid under the laws where you married (Jamaica) and if the marriage does not violate our basic laws on marriage. To end the marriage you will need to obtain a divorce.
