A few people have said that 50% of his disability will go to his STBX. Is this true? He was married for 12 years.

My friend is leaving his wife. He was injured and receives VA check for disability. When he separates will the check be his money only or will he have to expect a portion to go to his be ex wife during separation and then divorce?[?]
Does he have to go through a lawyer to make certain or can he still file for divorce on his own?
