My STBX and I are filing a joint 2010 income tax return. We owe $13k in taxes. My STBX’s income is 4 times mine. Am I responsible to pay half of that owed amount? We have not yet settled financially, but he is agreeing to a 50 / 50 split on everything, including his bonus and stock options from 2010’ that paid out this year. Therefore he thinks I owe half of the income tax. However my ability to pay $6500 is much less than his.
You are technically jointly liable for that debt, however many folks split it based on their pro-rata share of income.
