Divorce without a lawyer

Dear Paizonkr:

Greetings. Please see the link below which is where we keep all the information and documents for divorce. You do not need to retain an attorney to handle your divorce, unless you just don’t want to worry about it or go to court, but if you have questions or worries, see an attorney. Just remember that with the signing of the divorce judgment the claims for alimony and equitable distribution are lost.

The response posted above is based upon the limited factual information made available and is not intended as a full and complete response to the question. The only reliable manner to obtain complete and adequate legal advice is to consult with an attorney, fully explain your situation, and allow the attorney sufficient opportunity to research the applicable law and facts required to render an accurate opinion. The basic information provided above is intended as a public service but a full discussion with an attorney should be undertaken before taking any action.

My husband and I will be filling an uncontested divorce and have been separated for over a year. We have no kids and no property to separate. Is it necessary to hire a lawyer? Or in NC can I just go to the court house, fill out the paperwork, send it to him and then file, or is it absolutely necessary to have a lawyer prepare and submit the paperwork?
