I sent an answer to his filing divorce and now the counterclaim came in do I need to answer that? and if so what will happen next.

You will need to file a reply, and if your soon to be ex filed a counterclaim for equitable distribution, you must file a motion in the cause for equitable distribution as well. If a divorce is granted prior to settling property rights arising out of the marriage you will lose your rights to equitable distribution unless you have a claim pending at the time of divorce.
