Calculation of Alimony

Dear pf99:

Greetings. First, without sitting down and discussing all the issues, there is no way that I can tell you what amount is appropriate and what amount is not.

No, there is no rule or standard for the paying spouse to pay 1/2 of his income - or any percentage for that matter.

Finally, alimony does not have much to do with one’s “contribution to the marriage.” Alimony is based on need and accustomed standard of living, among other factors. Best of luck.

Dear pf99:

Greetings. I forgot to mention that it is important that you talk with an attorney to ensure that your alimony provisions are drafted correctly. You want to avoid paying alimony for the remainder of your life. Thank you.

My seperate wife and I our having a discussion before signing our seperation agreement having to do with the calculation of Amlmony. She told me she saw I this webiste, That the paying spose pays 1/2 of his income to the dependent spouse.

Is that correct? Sounds high to me.

I make about 55K per year. I have agreed to pay her $1,050 per month. There are no issues of adulty. My wife my has had health issues that have prevented her from working, however there has not been a fromal diagnosis of what is preventing her from working.

Is this a fair amount? FYI I think it is given her “contribution to the marriage”.
