Military benefits once divorced

My husband has been in the military 20 years. We married two years before he retired and have two children, ages 19 and 23. He is an alcoholic, domestic violence, now in a veterans shelter due to latest DWI. .I and kids are on Tricare medical and I do not get any of his retirement. He has no bills and I have all the bills when he left. I work full time but cannot make ends meet. He helps out from time to time with heat or groceries. Am I better off financially being separated forever or divorce him. We do not communicate well so I have no one to ask what to do?

It would not make a difference whether you stay married but separated or you are divorced as long as you have a separation agreement or court order addressing equitable distribution (property division of marital assets) and any other claims you may have such as alimony.
