The court may specify a time frame for payment specifically or may simply direct a party to pay in a reasonable time. How long a “reasonable” time is depends on the circumstances of the particular case.

The mediation orientation is intended to save time by explaining th process to a large group rather than having to do it one couple at a time. The orientation process varies by county.

The response posted above is based upon the limited factual information made available and is not intended as a full and complete response to the question. The only reliable manner to obtain complete and adequate legal advice is to consult with an attorney, fully explain your situation, and allow the attorney sufficient opportunity to research the applicable law and facts required to render an accurate opinion. The basic information provided above is intended as a public service but a full discussion with an attorney should be undertaken before taking any action.

When the judge places an order for equitable dist. to be made, how long is the other spouse given to pay up? Also, could you please explain why the spouses have to attend a “mediation orentation” before they can do the “personal mediation” between them. Is this a NC law or is just by the county?

Thank for your time.
