My boyfriend agreed to pay his ex wife’s college tuition. They were officially divorced in December. He used to pay it to her along with her alimony payment but he now wants to pay it directly to the college because he doesn’t think she is actually attending school. He didn’t get a bill from the school showing how much she actually owed, she just told him an amount and he paid it to her. Should he continue to pay it to her in order to claim it as alimony on his taxes? Would he still be able to claim it on his taxes if he pays it directly to the college?
Whether he continues to pay really depends on the wording of the Agreement. He cannot deduct any payments from his income if they are not paid direclty to his Wife.
