Serving the Defendant

Once the summons and complaint have been filed with the clerk of civil court and doc’s are filed, I understand that the defendant must be served the summons and complaint as well- IF I use the sheriffs department to serve the papers (which I will) how will I know he has been served? how will the court know? I know if it used certified mail I will get the green card back and then take that to the court house- so I am wondering if the sheriffs serves the papers will the clerk get verification from the sheriff- how will I know if this occurs?

The sheriff’s department will issue the return of service (on the back of the summons), and it will be in the file. You may contact the sheriff’s department to check on the status of service as well.
