My soon to be ex spouse just threatened me verbally that if I used an email condoning an emotional affarir to get out of paying alimony that “things would be horrible” for me. He’s been verbally and a few times physically abusive in the past. This has me worried. Does this count as a threat and if so, what can I do about it? I have already changed the locks, but still…

If you are truly afraid that you are in danger of imminent physical harm you may seek a Domestic Violence Restraining Order, however stating that “things will be horrible for you” in the context of divorce would not be enough. You would need to show some sort of threat of physical harm.
